LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Western Carolina men's and women's track & field teams began competition in the McCravy Memorial Friday on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The Catamounts earned three top 10 finishes on the day.
The men's and women's long jump was split into two divisions with the top-seeded athletes competing in the long jump invitational and everyone else competing in the long jump event. On the men's side in the invitational event, junior Bob McNeil was the seventh best collegiate finisher, placing ninth overall logging 7.02m. His jump was just shy of his season-best 7.03m that he did last week in the Niswonger Invitational. In the women's invitational, senior Raven Parrish placed 19th (5.23m).
In the long jump event, sophomore Abraham Faison earned a top five finish picking up a jump of 6.30m to finish fifth with teammate Tyler Bell coming in sixth (5.94m). Junior Brittany Powell tied for thirteenth with her best jump of 4.79m in the long jump while teammate Achsah Brice finished two spots back with her jump of 4.78m.
Senior Ashley Wala cleared a season-high 3.50m on her first attempt in the pole vault to earn an eleventh place finish.
In the men's weight throw, senior Jamie Van Pelt tossed 16.62m on his third throw to finish fifteenth.
