Columbus, Ohio - For the first time since Dec. 6, the Western Carolina men's and women' indoor track and field team returned to action, competing in the Ohio State Collegiate Series on Jan. 12.

The Catamount men took the top spot in each of the sprints. WCU freshman James Rainer won the 60 meters with a time of 6.94, while classmate Tubuyus Alford placed second (6.98). Darus Cofield won the 200 meters, posting a 22.41, with Rainer finishing fourth (22.87). Cofield helped WCU complete the sweep with a first-place finish in the 400 meters. His time of 49.62 was nearly a full second ahead of second place. Catamount Michael Bolton placed third in the 400.

"The men sprinters dominated," said head coach Danny Williamson. "Overall it was good to be back after the Christmas break. We turned in a good, competitive effort against some quality programs."

In addition to strong individual performances in the sprints, the Cats won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:18.72.

In the field events, Charles Rice eclipsed his own WCU record in winning the pole vault. His 16'0.75" effort bettered his height turned in during the team's first indoor meet of the season. While he did not win the weight throw, sophomore Nick McNeil had a personal record of 52'8.75" in the event.

On the women's side, Rosalyn Hood led the way. She won the long jump (18'7"), placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.46) and sixth in the triple jump (35'7.75").

"We did not have as many first place finishes for the women as we did in our first meet," Williamson said. "However, we had a much more solid effort overall."

Ronetta Burgess was WCU's top finisher in the 60 and 200 meter dashes with times of 7.83 (second) and 25.92 (third), respectively. She was less than a tenth of a second off the winning time in the 60 and less than four-tenths off in the 200. Burgess additionally led the Catamount contingent in the 60 meter hurdles, placing third with a time of 9.27.

Western took three of the top five spots in the pole vault, led by Laura Tieszen's runner-up finish (11'1.75"). The Cats also performed well in the long jump. In addition to Hood winning, Kamata Potts placed second and Altavise Franklin placed fourth.

Quiletta Dunston placed fifth weight throw with a distance of 49'9.25", which was additionally a personal record. Kiley Wright also had a personal record in the event, finishing sixth with her 41'11.5".
