A pair of winning performances and nine podium finishes highlighted the Western Carolina Track & Field teams' first meet of 2008, the Joe Hilton Tar Hell Invitational, held Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Dominique Young turned in the team's second provisional NCAA Championship qualifying performance in the 60 meter run. He won his preliminary heat with a time of 6.74 seconds, giving him the automatic qualifier and joining him with teammate Zeb Johnson as the first two Catamounts to punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships.
The WCU women's distance medley team took home top honors in their event with a time of 12:42.97, a full 22 seconds ahead of the second-place team from Kennesaw State University, who finished at 13:04.91
The Catamounts also took home two runner-up finishes in the meet, with Nicole Lopez finishing second in the women's weight throw, with a best distance of 15.42 meters; she is joined in the second place group by the 4x400 meter relay "A" team, with a time of 3:51.77 in the finals, a mere 0.47 seconds behind first-place North Carolina.
Raquel Ramseur led three WCU runners in the top ten in the 400-meter run, coming in third place with a time of 56.90 seconds, followed by Shalyn McMichael in 5th place, and Janet Carothers rounding out the top Catamount finishers in 9th.
Senior Kerrie Savery took home third place in the 800-meter run, with fellow WCU distance runner Stephen Hammond coming in third place in the 3000-meter event in a time of 9:01.37.
Matt Evens turned in the last podium finish of the day for Western, with his third place finish in the high jump, with a top height of 2.04 meters.
The two teams will be back in competition next weekend, traveling to Johnson City, Tennessee for the Niswonger Invitational, taking place on Jan. 18-19. For more results and news of all Western Carolina athletic teams, keep checking CatamountSports.com.
