Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamount cheerleading squad will hold open tryouts for the 2006-07 athletic seasons this Friday, April 21 through Sunday, April 23 on-campus at Western. The tryout will begin with registration at 6:00 pm Friday evening and a clinic to start at 6:30 pm. The remainder of the weekend schedule will be disseminated to participants on Friday night.
Under the direction of head coach, and WCU alum, Kim Cherry, the two primary objectives of the Catamount cheerleaders are to help promote school spirit and add to the game day experiences of all Catamount athletics, and to be the best in the Southern Conference. The WCU cheerleaders perform at all home and select away Catamount football games, as well as during both Catamount and Lady Catamount basketball home games. The cheerleaders also traditionally perform at the annual Southern Conference men's and women's basketball championships. Most recently, the cheerleading squad performed at the 2006 Chick-Fil-A National Cheer & Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Tryouts are open to all current Western Carolina University students, as well as incoming freshmen and transfer students. Both men and women are encouraged to tryout for positions on the squad. Participants must show proof of insurance and acceptance to WCU in order to take part in the activities.
The tryout will include technical components, such as tumbling, all-girl and coed stunting, and performing routines, as well as additional items such as a timed mile run and an interview process with the coaching staff.
