Catamount Cheerleading Places Fifth at 2016 NCA Championships

Daytona Beach, Fla. - Western Carolina’s cheerleading squad finished fifth in the finals at the 2016 National Cheerleading Association (NCA) and National Dance Alliance (NDA) Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship, April 7-9.

The WCU Dance Team also finished well, placing third in the Jazz Division I competition held in Daytona.

Competing in the Small Coed Cheer Division I, WCU automatically advanced to the seven team final in the Band Shell on Friday. The University of Texas at Arlington claimed the title in the Small Coed Division over James Madison. The University at Albany finished in third place, just ahead of Utah Valley and Western Carolina. WCU edged University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Portland State for the fifth place finish.

The Catamounts received the third-best scoring in the field in both pyramids and overall effect by the judges.

Up next for the Catamount cheerleaders are tryouts for the 2016-17 squad which will be held in Cullowhee, April 22-24 in Camp Lab Gymnasium.
