Daytona Beach, Fla. - Advancing to the finals through the Challenge Cup competition, the Western Carolina Cheerleaders finished fifth in the finals at the 2015 National Cheerleading Association (NCA) and National Dance Alliance (NDA) Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championship.

Competing in the Cheer Small Coed Division, WCU just missed automatically qualifying for the finals with a sixth-place showing through the preliminary rounds after a point deduction. However, in their second performance of the day, the Catamounts were the top team in the Challenge Cup round to advance into the finals.

WCU edged Portland State, DePaul and North Florida to claim the final spot in the five-team final.

The University of Texas at Arlington claimed the title in the small coed division over another Texas program, Stephen F. Austin. Central Arkansas finished in third place, just ahead of James Madison and Western Carolina.

Up next for the Catamount cheerleaders are tryouts for the 2015-16 squad which will be held in Cullowhee April 24-26 in Camp Lab Gymnasium. WCU looks to replace 11 seniors from the 2014-15 squad, nine of which competed in the national championships for the Purple & Gold.
