Cullowhee, N.C. - After providing spirit to Catamount football and basketball games, as well as performing at the Southern Conference and NCAA basketball tournaments, this season, the Western Carolina cheerleading squad is headed to Florida.
The Catamount cheerleaders will compete in the National Cheerleaders Association Chic-fil-A Cheer and Dance Collegiate Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., on April 6 through April 10. Western will compete in the small-coed division at the NCA national cheerleading championships.
Fans in the area can preview the Cats' competition performance by coming out and supporting the squad as they show their routine to the campus and community on both Thursday, March 31 at 8:00 pm and again on Monday, April 4 at 7:30 pm in the gymnastics area of Reid Gymnasium.
In 2001, Western went to the NCA Collegiate National Finals and finished sixth in the small co-ed division. A year later, the squad improved, finishing in third place in 2002. First-year head coach Kim Cherry was a captain on the 2001 squad, while her assistant, Eddie Wells, was on the 2001 squad and a captain during the 2002 competition.
