WCU Cheerleading 2011-12 Tryout Information Packet

Under the direction of head coach, and WCU alum, Kim Cherry-Beck, the two primary objectives of the Catamount cheerleaders are to help promote school spirit and add to the game day experiences of all Catamount athletics, and to be the best in the Southern Conference. A small, co-ed squad, the WCU cheerleaders perform at all home and select away Catamount football games, as well as during both Catamount men's and women's basketball home games. The cheerleaders also traditionally perform at the annual Southern Conference men's and women's basketball championships.

Last year, the Catamount cheerleaders competed in the National Cheerleading Association (NCA) Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. The squad placed fifth after the preliminary round to advance to the finals for the first-time since 2002. An injury during the finals routine resulted in a seventh-place finish for WCU in its division.

The 2011-12 squad tryout will include technical components, such as tumbling, all-girl and coed stunting, and performing routines, as well as additional items such as a timed mile run and an interview process with the coaching staff.

A pair "open gym" dates will be held prior to the tryout to allow interested participants to workout with the coaching staff in preparation for the tryout sessions. The two open gym times are from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm on Wednesday, March 16 and Thursday, March 24 in Reid Gym on campus. The two sessions are not required in order to tryout or to be considered for the 2011-12 team.
