Catamount Football Community Outreach

Nov. 9, 2003

Each week, during which there is a WCU home football game, the Catamount football team has been reaching out to the community, visiting the patients and staff at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, NC.

These visits have occurred every Friday of home game weekends since the beginning of the 2003 season. WCU Assistant Coach Allen Mogridge organized the visits and a dozen players on average visit the hospital each time. The players spend their time speaking with patients and passing out Catamount football guides, programs and pins. Senior captain Michale Spicer thinks the visits are valuable for both the patients and the players. "I think it is a great experience for me and my teammates - we like getting out in the community to show we care about the people in the community."

Senior captain Rod Dunlap enjoys going to the hospital as well. "Visiting the patients in the hospital made me appreciate what I have - it is sometimes easy to forget how fortunate we really are."

Both players and coaches hope the hospital visits are a tradition that can continue for years to come.
