CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will again highlight selected Student-Athletes for SAAC Athletes of the Month and SAAC Spotlight Award. SAAC have released its winners for the month of August and will unveil September's winners in the coming days.
The male and female recipients for SAAC Athlete of the Month for August are Markie-Lynn Studnicky from women's soccer and Josey Weaver from men's cross country. The SAAC Spotlight Award winners are: Alex Gastesi (women's soccer), Leah Butler (volleyball) and Kyle Bernier (cross country).
Studnicky, a freshman forward for women's soccer, had a stellar introduction to her collegiate career in the month of August. She scored the match-tying goal, 1-1, against then 20th ranked West Virginia, on August 19, before the Catamounts were edged by the Mountaineers, 2-1. It was her first collegiate goal of her career. For the month, Studnicky had a goal and an assist scoring three points.
Weaver paced Western Carolina's men's cross country team, in the squad's first meet of the 2012 season, at the Western Carolina Invitational. He placed second at the Catamounts' home meet, on August 31, with a time of 15:21.6 in the 5K event.
Each month a player in season will be chosen that has had the best statistics and biggest impact on the team. SAAC Player of the Month is presented to the male and female Student-Athlete is voted on by the SAAC members.
SAAC Spotlight Athlete of the Month is presented to the male or female Student-Athlete that has excelled in athletics, academics, leadership, and service in their community for the previous month. It is awarded to the athlete that does more than what they are asked on a daily bases and do all they can to improve the image of their team and catamount athletics. It is meant to bring recognition to an athlete for their off the field accomplishments more than their on the field accomplishments. An Athlete can be either in or out of season.
