From the Desk of Western Carolina Director of Athletics, Chip Smith

Sept. 23, 2008

To all the Catamount Fans who were at the Presbyterian game,

You were tremendous!!! Standing on the sideline during that nail-biting, back and forth, "did he catch the ball?" second half, you made your presence known. You were standing, you were loud and your support helped the Catamounts to that much-needed road win.

There has been a great deal of excitement about a new coaching staff, new uniforms, new logo and new field surface - and rightly so. But what really is exciting is that on Saturday, you "walked the talk." Going on the road, wearing the purple, picking the team up when they had to score (twice!!), getting loud - you were a big part of the "W." And it was a big win, getting the Catamounts to .500 for the first time in a while and providing momentum for the conference schedule ahead.

There is a lot of work to be done. The Southern Conference is strong every year, and this is certainly no exception. The Catamounts may play at least four or five more ranked opponents before the end of the season. They will need you at every game, just like at Presbyterian. Bring your friends, former classmates and neighbors and plan your fall Saturdays around WCU Football.

If you are one of those who couldn't be at last Saturday's game, we need you, too. Make E.J. Whitmire Stadium /Bob Waters a real home field advantage with your presence and cheer for the Catamounts. We can (and did) make a difference.

Thank you for setting a standard this weekend. Let's raise the bar!!

- Chip Smith, WCU Athletics Director
