Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina and UNC Asheville have been "fighting like Cats and Dogs" since Dec. 10, 1965. In 2006, the two developed a head-to-head trophy competition called "the Parkway Series," which is named after the Blue Ridge Parkway which runs between the two campuses.
For each head-to-head, men's and women's competition, a point will be awarded to the winning team. At the end of the year, the team which has accumulated the most points will be declared the winner of that year's series.
Western Carolina only dropped four of the 12 head-to-head meetings with the Bulldogs a year ago en route to claiming the series, 8-5. WCU dropped both cross country points, as well as the women's tennis point before splitting the two baseball games, falling at home before winning at McCormick Field in Asheville to claim the series.
The 2007-08 head-to-head competitions begin with women's volleyball on the last day of August, and will continue through baseball season.
