Catamount Sports Network Announces Coverage of 2009-10 Western Carolina Athletics

Aug. 28, 2009

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina athletics today announced its lineup for its sports radio broadcasts for the 2009-10 and list of affiliates for the 2009 Catamount football season.

Led by the flagship station, WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee, the Catamount Sports Network (CSN) during football season can be heard on five radio stations across Western North Carolina. Perennial network affiliate, Jackson County Radio, 680 AM WRGC in Sylva, returns to the fold for both football and men's basketball, with The Dove, 1490 AM WPFJ in Franklin and Henderson County's Timeless Favorites, 1600 AM WTZQ, to carry all Catamount football games.

WPTL, 920 AM in Canton has joined the Catamount Sports Network affiliate list full-time in 2009 after broadcasting a limited schedule the past two seasons. The Haywood County-based station is slated to carry both football and men's basketball this coming year.

Also, new for 2009 is an increased Internet presence. CSN has partnered with Stretch Internet (www.stretchinternet.com) to provide unlimited streaming audio through the athletics web site, CatamountSports.com. Fans can log onto the official website of Catamount athletics for streaming audio provided by the Catamount Sports Network.

Broadcasts will begin with a new, expanded 90-minute Carolina Ford Dealer's pre-game show an hour and a half prior to the scheduled kick-off time. Fans can also comment on the game and broadcast again through CatamountSports@hotmail.com.

Gary Ayers is set to return to the microphone as the play-by-play voice for both football and men's basketball in 2009-10. All told, Ayers has been behind mic for 23 of the past 24 years and has been a familiar voice to the region's sports fans for over three decades. In addition to serving as the "Voice of the Catamounts," the Swain County native has done play-by-play for Pisgah High, Tuscola High, Franklin High, Cherokee High and Swain High football and basketball. Ayers also spent several seasons as the public address announcer for WCU Athletics.

Also returning to the air waves this fall are Jeff Bryson, who will assume a producer and halftime show host, and sideline reporter, Greg McLamb. Bryson, a 21-year radio veteran ranging across the state, has also served as the Public Address voice for WCU athletics since 1998, while McLamb - a 2000 graduate of WCU - will patrol the sidelines for a second season.

Other voices that are scheduled to be heard on CSN this fall include former Sports Information Director - and current Director of the Cats' "W" Club - Steve White and current Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, Daniel Hooker. White will again pass along Catamount mythology with his lovable, "What's Up with Whitey" segment while Hooker, who is the primary contact for Catamount football, will also assist in the production of the pre-game show. The 2001 graduate of WCU also assists with men's basketball broadcasts, as well as handles play-by-play duties for Catamount baseball.

A new addition to WCU's football broadcasts this year will be former professional head coach, Rik Richards, as the color analyst. Richards, who has over 15 years of football experience ranging from the college to indoor professional levels, will bring a wealth of football knowledge to the broadcast. A native of Seattle, Washington, Richards has coached arenafootball2 teams in Charleston, S.C., and Manchester, N.H., and also coached his squad to the inaugural Atlantic Indoor Football League (AIFL) championship with the Richmond (Va.) Bandits in 2005.

All told, Richards compiled a 60-28 record as a professional head coach amongst five stops.

Looking ahead to basketball season, Ayers and Hooker will again team to provide coverage of the Catamount men, while Steven Crumpler returns for his seventh season on the call of Lady Catamount women's basketball. Rounding out the broadcast season will be Catamount baseball with Hooker providing pitch-by-pitch accounts next spring.
