Southern Conference Announces 2009-10 Honor Roll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference announced its 2009-10 Honor Roll Wednesday afternoon, highlighted by 130 Western Carolina student-athletes.

Davidson paced the conference with 285 student-athletes on the honor roll followed by Appalachian State (197), Elon (176), Wofford (175) and Georgia Southern (152).

The SocCon had more than 1,900 student-athletes from its 12 member institutions named to the list, the most honorees since the inception of the honor roll prior to the 1988-89 athletic season. The average grade point average of the student-athletes recognized was a 3.46 while 69 student-athletes posted a 4.0 GPA.

Western Carolina's David Gift (track and field), Emily Lynn (soccer), Brittany Lysik (volleyball), Carrie Minogue (volleyball), Danielle Shaurette (track and field/cross country) and Morgan Turner (track and field/cross country) were recognized for boasting a 4.0 GPA.

There were a total of 858 student-athletes who earned a 3.5 GPA or higher that were further honored with the Commissioner's Medal.

The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 GPA or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
