More on the Catamount Sports Network
Cullowhee, N.C. - Counting down to the start of the 2006-07 athletic seasons, the Western Carolina athletic department today announced its radio lineup for the upcoming Catamount football season, in addition to other ways to follow the Cats this year. Four stations, including WWCU 90dot5 FM in Cullowhee; 1480 AM WPFJ in Franklin; 1600 AM WTZQ in Hendersonville; and 1350 AM WZGM in Black Mountain are scheduled to air Catamount football this fall as a part of the Catamount Sports Network (CSN), with live on-line audio also available at CatamountSports.com.
The WCU athletic department has partnered with WWCU-FM in Cullowhee as the official "Flagship Station" of the Catamount Sports Network. A broadcast service of Western Carolina University, WWCU - or Power 90dot5 - has carried Catamount athletic broadcasts for numerous years and has worked to improve the quality and reach of the air signal, now incorporating Jackson and Haywood Counties. The station also offers an online presence with live streaming audio at WWCUFM.com.
"We are happy to not only be the home for classic hits in the mountains, but also the flagship of Catamount athletics and the Catamount Sports Network," said station student general manager, senior Kyle McCurry. "Through the cooperation and hard work of Daniel Hooker, Mike Cawood and the WCU athletic department staff, over the last two years alone, Power 90dot5 has aired championship broadcasts of Lady Catamount basketball, Catamount women's soccer, and the first-ever Catamount softball games, and we look forward to being the source for CSN coverage this year."
In addition to carrying live game broadcasts, WWCU is the home of the interactive talk show, "In the Litterbox," which can be heard every Wednesday night at 7:00 pm. Each show includes live, in-studio interviews, listener phone calls and reviews and highlights the previous and upcoming week in Catamount athletics. WCU junior Josh Thompson is set to host the show as it enters its second season. On Catamount home football dates, Thompson and WWCU will also produce a tailgate show which will precede CSN's pre-game coverage by one hour. And finally, fans can get caught up on all of the action every Monday through Tuesday with the Catamount "2-Minute Drill" on Power 90dot5.
For a second-consecutive season, joining WWCU along the Catamount Sports Network coverage of football are 1600 AM WTZQ in Hendersonville and 1350 AM WZGM, Fox Sports Radio in Black Mountain. WZGM will also offer online streaming audio at FXSports1350.com. New this fall is the addition of 1480 AM WPFJ "The Dove" in Franklin. (More information on the CSN affiliates and broadcast schedules for basketball season will be released later in the fall).
Western Carolina Hall of Famer, Steve White, will again be along side Gary Ayers, the Voice of the Catamounts, in the football press box to bring the sights and sounds of every Catamount victory to the fans. Joining the dynamic duo is Brandon Stephens, who will again serve as the sideline reporter during CSN's coverage of Catamount Football. Ayers has been behind the play-by-play microphone for Western in 19 of the past 20 years, while White, who served as WCU's sports information director for 28 years before his retirement in 1998, has been on the air since 1970 for the Purple & Gold. Stephens, who is also a part of the Lady Catamount basketball broadcast team with Steven Crumpler and Daniel Hooker, has over 20 years of radio experience including working as the voice of Smoky Mountain High Mustang athletics.
"We're especially glad to have our broadcast team of Steve, Gary and Brandon back with the Catamount Sports Network again this year," said WCU athletics director, Chip Smith. "Their broadcasts have become as anticipated by our fans as the games themselves. We're also looking forward to working with our CSN affiliates in a new season. The coverage we will have in the Asheville/Franklin/Hendersonville/Black Mountain regions will combine with the expanded role of WWCU to make exciting Catamount Athletics available to everyone."
Fans can also follow along with the Catamounts with live GameTracker online at CatamountSports.com. The GameTracker feature will be available for every home game of Catamount women's soccer, volleyball, men and women's basketball, baseball, and softball games, with coverage of a few away contests available as well.
As always, CatamountSports.com is your home for information regarding Western Carolina athletics with scores, statistics, game recaps and features. Also available online are media guides and interactive fun, such as the Catamount fan poll.
