Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University unveiled its new athletics logos Wednesday at the "Big Reveal," held in the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center. As a surprise addition, WCU Chancellor Dr. John Bardo and head football coach Dennis Wagner also unleashed the new-look Catamount football helmet.
A crowd of nearly 1,000 fans and supporters were on hand to witness the unveiling, which was accompanied by a highlight video that recapped the first 75 years of Western Carolina athletic teams competing under the "Catamount" moniker. After calling members of the WCU Board of Trustees and numerous other dignitaries to the stage, the Catamount head coaches were presented with logoed shirts, hats and a lapel pin by Bardo and Athletics Director, Chip Smith.
But before Wagner was able to leave the stage ahead of the WCU student-athlete fashion show, he and Bardo displayed the new, gold football helmet which was met with a roar of approval.
The regular season for Western Carolina athletics kicks off with a pair of road competitions for the women's soccer team as the Catamounts visit directional rival, East Carolina, on Friday, Aug. 22 and at North Carolina State on Sunday, Aug. 24. The first home contest of the 2008-09 season will also open the Wagner Era for the WCU football team as the Cats host Shorter College on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7:00 pm at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.
