Catamount Athletics Unofficially Kicks Off with 2008 Western Open Golf Tournament

Waynesville, N.C. - The annual, unofficial kickoff of the Catamount Athletics season - the Western Open Golf Tournament - was held Wednesday at the Waynesville Country Club. Included in the day's festivities was the golf tournament, followed by an evening porch social on at the Country Club.

The evening was capped by a dinner where WCU coaches introduced their staff for the upcoming seasons, as well as words from Catamount Club Director, Gorham Bradley, and Western Carolina Chancellor, Dr. John Bardo.

Over 100 golfers teed off on Wednesday afternoon, with over 160 attending the porch social and dinner held at the country club that evening.

The first athletic event for Western Carolina will be next Monday, Aug. 11 as the women's soccer team hosts Cincinnati in an exhibition scrimmage at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm. On Wednesday, Aug. 13, WCU will unveil its new logo at 4:00 pm in the Ramsey Center.

The first regular season competition for the Catamounts this year also involves the women's soccer team as WCU visits directional rival, East Carolina, for its season opener at 5:00 pm on Friday, Aug. 22 in Greenville, N.C.
