Cullowhee, N.C. - Seven Western Carolina athletic teams will be starting practice in the coming weeks, with the football team taking the field first on August 9. The volleyball program will begin its preseason preparation on August 13 with soccer beginning on the following day (August 14). The men's and women's cross country team will begin August 22, while the men's and women's golf programs will not begin until classes start on August 26.
The football team will have its first practice in full pads on August 13. On August 24, the public is invited to the "Meet the Cats" scrimmage, which is set to begin at 7 pm and admittance is free.
On August 18, the soccer team will host an exhibition match with Mars Hill at 2 pm. The soccer program will play the first of its record-setting 10 home matches on August 27 versus Gardner-Webb at 4 pm.
All Western Carolina students and fans can interact with 14 Catamount teams and meet new softball head coach Megan Smith on September 1 at the Second Annual Cat Attack on the UC Lawn. The event will begin at 4 pm and run through 8 pm. There will be interactive games with the WCU student-athletes, music and trivia.
The volleyball team will not be able to participate in the Second Annual Cat Attack on September 1 as the squad will kick off its regular season at Clemson. The volleyball team will spend the entire month on September on the road, playing its first home match on October 1 versus Elon (7 pm).
One day after the Cat Attack (September 2), the football team will open its 2004 schedule with a Thursday night contest versus West Virginia State (7 pm).
