Cullowhee, N.C. - - On Wednesday, August 3, members of the Catamount Athletic Training Department met with members of the Westcare Emergency Medical Services, Western Carolina University Athletics Education Program, Carolina West Sports Medicine and Harris Regional Hospital in an in-service session to streamline the process of treating student-athletes with spinal injuries.
The continuing education session will increase the care for an athlete suffering from a cervical spine injury. All in attendance play a role in the stabilization and transportation of the injured athlete. This session will allow everyone to have a common perspective of the situation.
"Dealing with a spine injury to an athlete is a potentially life threatening," said WCU head athletic trainer Grady Hardeman. "Therefore it is important that all parties involved be on the same page and has the same goals and objectives."
This is the first in a series of educational sessions the Athletic Training Department has planned and is hoping to expand upon in the near future. It is their hope to involve other counties, high schools and health care professionals to help increase the awareness of cervical spine injuries.
