WCU Puts 84 on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll

Aug. 4, 2004

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina had 84 student-athletes post a grade point average of 3.0 or better as over 1,400 student-athletes from 12 member institutions were named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor roll for the 2003-04 year. The 1,479 names is a conference record, surpassing the 1,439 from the 2001-02 academic year.

Western Carolina had seven student-athletes post a perfect 4.0 GPA, including Yoneko Allen (women's basketball), Melanie Cooper (women's cross country/track), Erika Danford (women's golf), Brian Pesci (football), Emily Pierce (women's soccer), Summer Thagard (women's basketball) and Jason Whaley (football).

The 2003-04 year was an excellent one for WCU student-athletes. Five Catamounts (Allen, Whaley, Pierce, Brandy Andersen and Leslie Martin) were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District III team for their contributions on the paying field and excellence in the classroom, with Whaley and Allen going on to earn Academic All-America honors. Whaley, a first team Academic All-America, also earned an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, while Allen and men's basketball player Emre Atsur each were recipients of the Southern Conference Mike Wood Foundation postgraduate scholarship.
