Cullowhee, N.C. - You will be seeing it. You will wonder what it is. And in a few weeks, you will actually be doing it. Doing what, you may ask? Well, come August 31, you will "Get In The `Whee".
To help you understand just what this new tagline or slogan means, allow us to further explain a mentality that has been fermenting across the Western Carolina campus for quite some time.
Western Carolina is growing, not only in the number of students the University attracts each year, but also in our on-campus initiatives such as our improvement to the facilities and showcasing some of the top student-athletes in the Southern Conference, region and nation. This past year alone, Western led the SoCon in total number of all-conference honors and had four Championships, one coming from softball in the program's inaugural season, and we're knocking on the door for even more this upcoming year. Couple that with an emotional connection and a love for a place that people have come to call "The `Whee" (a popular shortening for our own Cullowhee), and there you have it.
"The new theme was developed for everyone with a connection to Western Carolina University," said Catamount Director of Athletics Chip Smith. "Cullowhee is a unique name for a special place. We hope it will resonate with all of our fans."
Being in the `Whee is more than just a physical location...it is a call to action for support as well as an overall mindset. And that mindset is a recipe for success that asks the Catamount faithful to simply: Be Loud. Be Proud. Wear Purple.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be in "The `Whee" in order to "Get In The `Whee". Not only can fans "Get in the `Whee" when coming to the Valley for sporting events, but everyone associated with Western Carolina can "Get in the `Whee" during the week. Show your support by flying car flags around your town. On Friday, everyone from Manteo to Murphy ... Key West, Fla., to Caribou, Maine ... is encouraged to show your Western pride by wearing purple. Make purple a large part of your wardrobe, especially when coming to Cullowhee to back the Catamounts.
Five years ago, the WCU Department of Athletics released a statement which continues to serve as the mission statement of all its coaches, student-athletes, and staff; "One Goal... To Be the Best." That mission continues today, with the new "Get in the `Whee" campaign aimed at driving more support from fans, students, community, and the Catamount Club.
So, now is the time to create a little hype around a concept that has already drawn the attention of our students, community members and sports fans alike. We are calling out to our Catamount faithful to get excited ... heck, get "pumped," and come support WCU Athletics in a way that you never have before.
