Cullowhee, N.C. - A total of 103 Western Carolina University student-athletes were named to the 2005-06 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, as released by the conference office this week. All told, over 1,400 student-athletes from the 11 member institutions were named to the honor roll.
SoCon softball Freshman of the Year, WCU pitcher Jenny Jackson, was the lone Western student-athlete to post a perfect 4.0 grade point average, while 10 additional Catamounts boasted a grade point average of 3.9 or higher.
Prior to the 1988-89 athletic year, SoCon athletic directors established the honor roll as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. After 364 earned the honor the first year, the honor roll has increased in 12 of the 16 subsequent years. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
The average GPA of the 1,436 student-athletes honored was 3.44. Forty percent of the honor roll achieved a 3.5 grade point average with fifty-seven student-athletes recording a 4.0 GPA.
