Cullowhee, N.C. - Sixty golfers and nearly 100 attendees helped unofficially kickoff the 2010-11 athletics season for Western Carolina University Thursday night at the annual Western Open event held at the exclusive Laurel Ridge Country Club in Waynesville.
"The Western Open Golf Tournament continues to be one of the highlight events on the Catamount Golf Tour. We had a great turnout both for the golf event as well as the dinner. Attendees had the opportunity to play one of the most beautiful golf courses in mountains and also visit with many of our Catamount Head Coaches to gain insight on each of their upcoming seasons," said Catamount Club Director, Gorham Bradley. "A big thank you goes out to Laurel Ridge and all who participated and sponsored this year's Western Open."
WCU head football coach Dennis Wagner, head men's basketball coach Larry Hunter and head baseball coach Bobby Moranda all spoke at the event, with additional head coaches Manolo Concepcion (volleyball), Mallory Hetzel (women's golf) and Danny Williamson (cross country, track & field) also on hand to meet with Catamount supporters.
The next stop on the Catamount Golf Tour is set for Friday, Sept. 3 in Raleigh, N.C., just one day before the Catamount football season opener at North Carolina State. The golf tournament will take place at the River Ridge Country Club.
Bradley said, "We look forward to seeing a great crowd of Purple as we kickoff the 2010 WCU Football season in Raleigh!"
