Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina Director of Athletics Chip Smith this week announced the hiring of Todd Lawing as the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations. Lawing brings a wealth of collegiate experience, joining the WCU staff after most recently serving as the Senior Executive Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Director of NCAA Compliance at Division-II member institution, Lenoir-Rhyne, in Hickory.
Lawing replaces longtime WCU employee Fred Cantler, who retired back in March as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations. Lawing will oversee all internal operations of the Catamount Athletic Department including the athletic training and weight rooms, compliance, as well as select game day operations.
"It is great to have Todd Lawing as a Catamount. He brings all the experience and qualities we were looking for in this search. I am sure he, wife Andi and their two children will soon be very involved in the campus and the community," Smith said.
A native of Denver, N.C., Lawing spent seven years at his alma mater, Lenior-Rhyne, working his way up to Senior Executive Associate Athletic Director in the summer of 2010 after serving as Associate Athletic Director the three years prior at L-R. He got his start with the Bears' athletics department from 2000-2002 while earning his master's degree, working as the department's first-ever athletic marketing intern after lettering for four years on the baseball diamond.
Lawing also worked as an Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Special Events from 2004-06.
During his tenure at Lenoir-Rhyne, the university hosted one NCAA Division II Women's Basketball (2009) and three Softball Southeast Regional Tournaments (2009, 2010 and 2011) where Lawing served as tournament director for all three events. He also served as an Associate Trustee for the Piedmont Educational Foundation/Bears Club.
Lawing has also been a member of the Hickory Sports Commission, which works to further the quality of life through the development, promotion, and recruitment of sporting events and activities to the Greater Hickory area. Since August of 2009, Lawing has been a member of the commission's board.
In addition, Lawing has been a part of the Charity Chase Half Marathon's Race Committee since January of 2005. The half marathon through Hickory, N.C., has raised over $56,000 for local charities.
Prior to Lenoir-Rhyne, Lawing worked with his family at Ken Lawing Builders, Inc., in Denver, N.C.
Lawing received his bachelor's degree in sports management with a minor in business administration in the spring of 2000 and earned his master's degree in business administration in 2002, both from Lenoir-Rhyne.
Lawing is married to the former Andi Penley, who is also a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne (2002) and is originally from nearby Enka, N.C. The couple has one daughter, Kenna (4) and one son, Grady (Born October 2010).
