Catamount Club Finishes 2010 Campaign in Record Style

July 12, 2010

Cullowhee, N.C. - For the third-consecutive year, the Catamount Club exceeded the $1 million mark in overall gifts designated to support Western Carolina athletics, finishing the 2010 fiscal year at $1,135,435 in gifts to annual and endowment funds.

During the 2009-2010 Campaign, the Catamount Club actively worked to raise additional funds for support of the ever increasing scholarship costs, as well as to grow the membership. In just 12 months, over 300 new members joined the Catamount Club to bring the total of membership to 813. That is a dramatic increase from the 2008-2009 campaign which finished with 698 active members.

"We are extremely thankful for the support our alumni and fans have contributed to the Catamount Athletic Scholarship Fund. Our greatest need in 2010-2011 will continue to be scholarship aid for Western Carolina University student-athletes," said Catamount Club Director, Gorham Bradley.

"As the Catamount Club prepares for the upcoming year, we will continue many of our current membership growth strategies as well as the implementation of new initiatives. With the help of each donor we will increase the opportunities for each of our teams to win championships," added Bradley.

With annual scholarship gifts being a crucial need, Catamount alumni and fans responded with a six-percent increase in annual support in 2009-2010, raising the Catamount Scholarship Fund from $382,096.21 to a record $404,278.31. Dozens of current donors led the way by upgrading their membership level as well as recruiting new members into the membership.

"This has been another very good year for the Catamount Club - thanks to everyone who helped make it a success," said WCU Director of Athletics, Chip Smith. "It has come at a critical time for Catamount Athletics. The loss of the out-of-state waivers will reduce our scholarship budget by over $600,000. Meeting this need will be extremely challenging and we ask for your continued and increasing support of the Catamount Scholarship Fund."

The Catamount Club's mission is to provide the necessary resources to the nearly 325 student athletes at Western Carolina University so they can achieve their full potential academically and athletically.
