34 Student-Athletes named to SoCon Spring Academic All-Conference Team

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina ranked second with 34 student-athletes, Samford had a lead-leading 36, on the Southern Conference Academic All-Conference team for the 2010 spring season as announced today. A total of 310 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.

Student-athletes, which participated in baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's outdoor track and field recorded a 3.54 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Western Carolina had a total of 86 student-athletes named to the Southern Conference Academic All-Conference teams for fall, spring and summer. The Catamounts had 27 in the fall, including 12 from the women's soccer team, and led the league with 25 for the winter all-academic team.

This spring, Western Carolina had nine members of the women's track and field team make the academic all-conference team, paced by senior Danielle Shuratte who topped all Catamount student-athletes with a 3.95 GPA in interior design. Baseball followed closely with eight student-athletes on the team, topped by senior Tyler Kirkpatrick who was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Second Team Academic All-District Team.

To be eligible, student-athletes must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and had to compete in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

The women's outdoor track and field programs supplied the greatest number of honorees with 71, closely followed by baseball which had 61 players qualify.
