CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
The Southern Conference announced today its Academic All-Conference team for the 2012 spring season. A total of 311 student-athletes were named to the team with 25 Catamounts on the squad, the same number of student-athletes that earned the honor in the fall.
Juniors Olivia Jacobs (track & field) and Haley Pace (softball) paced WCU with GPA’s of 3.98 in Nutrition & Dietetics and Biology, respectively. Men’s track & field and softball each placed six athletes apiece on the team.
Among the 311 student-athletes were at least 15 representatives from each of the 12 SoCon institutions, participating in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s tennis. The group recorded a combined 3.60 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
Among member institutions, Furman paced all league schools with 39 members on the academic all-conference team. Closely behind was Samford with 36 student-athletes earning recognition along with 30 from Wofford. WCU tied for seventh with UNCG seventh among league schools with 25 total student-athletes earning the recognition.
