June 20, 2006

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina had 25 student-athletes named to the Southern Conference TIAA-CREF All-Academic team for the 2006 spring season. The 25 spring honorees, which ranked third in the SoCon behind Furman (29) and Appalachian State (26), included nine Catamounts from the women's outdoor track & field team, seven from baseball, four from women's golf, two from men's outdoor track & field, two from tennis and one from men's golf team. All told, Western had a total of 63 SoCon TIAA-CREF All-Academic honors during the 2005-06 season, including 25 during the fall, 13 during the winter and 25 during the spring.

No other school in the SoCon had as many as seven baseball players or as many as four women's golfers represented, while Western's nine honorees from women's outdoor track & field were second to Elon's 10.

To be eligible for the SoCon TIAA-CREF All-Academic honor, a student-athlete must be in their second season at the institution, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point-average and have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the spring season.

A total of 218 student-athletes on the SoCon TIAA-CREF All-Academic team for spring 2006 averaged a 3.54 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The men's and women's outdoor track and field squads combined for 98 student-athletes on the academic team, with baseball adding 33.

This is the third year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. The all-academic teams are made possible by a grant from the Southern Conference's Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
