May 31, 2012

Cullowhee, N.C. - The next stop on the 2012 Catamount Golf Tour is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6, with the annual Catamount Football Classic. This year's event will be held at the Maggie Valley Club in Maggie Valley, N.C., with all funds generated going towards the WCU Football Scholarship Fund.

Western Carolina first-year head coach Mark Speir and the members of his inaugural coaching staff, as well as several of the current football student-athletes will be in attendance at the tournament.

"We're very excited about the Catamount Golf Classic," said Speir. "It is a great opportunity to spend quality time with alumni and boosters, enjoying fellowship and increasing the energy and support of Catamount athletics, especially football. It's also a great chance to meet some of the student-athletes we have in our football program to show first hand who our scholarship funds are assisting. My staff and I are greatly looking forward to seeing everyone next Wednesday."

Registration for the tournament begins at 11:30 am ahead of the 1:00 pm shotgun start to the four-man, Captain's Choice formatted event. Throughout the round, there will be specialty prizes awarded for feats such as longest drive, closest to the pin on select par-3 holes and a putting contest. The individual entry fees $150 and includes greens fees for the tournament, a boxed lunch, dinner, beverages, as well as a tournament gift.

Golf hole sponsorship opportunities starting at just $100 still remain for supporters that are unable to attend the event.

Following the afternoon of golf, there is a dinner reception and caravan coaches' reception, as well as a special auction, which begins around 5:30 pm. Auction items include such things as travel trips to Marshall (Sept. 8) or Alabama (Nov. 17), both of WCU's NCAA Division I FBS opponents in 2012; "Coach for a Day" during preseason camp; a personalized, personalized game jersey; a limited-edition WCU football helmet; and Silver Club Level tickets to see the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.
