Western Carolina Places League-Leading 34 Student-Athletes on Spring Academic All-SoCon Team

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina had 34 of its student-athletes named to the Southern Conference's Spring Academic All-Conference team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. A total of 243 student-athletes in eight sports, representing all 11 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team. The 243 student-athletes averaged a 3.54 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

The Catamounts led all SoCon schools with the 34 selections, followed by Appalachian State (28), Elon (26), Georgia Southern (25) and Furman (24). The league's women's outdoor track and field teams placed 62 student-athletes on the academic team while 37 baseball players and 36 men's outdoor track and field athletes were honored

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded campaign.

Ten of WCU's women's track & field student-athletes were named to the team, followed by eight members of the men's track & field team. The six Western baseball players named to the honorary squad was tied for the most chosen from any baseball team in the conference.

26 of the 34 selections for Western Carolina have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. For the 2007-08 academic year, WCU garnered a total of 70 Academic All-SoCon honors.

This is the sixth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season.
