40 Catamounts Have Degrees Confirmed at Spring Commencement

Cullowhee, N.C. - Forty former Western Carolina student-athletes and four with ties to the WCU athletic department including two student managers and a pair earning a Masters degree participated in graduation commencement ceremonies over the weekend in the Ramsey Center. All told, nine football players, six apiece from Catamount baseball and track & field, five women's soccer players, four from men's basketball, three cheerleaders, two from both women's basketball and women's golf and one volleyball player all graduated.

Also, women's soccer graduate assistant Anna Betton and former assistant athletic equipment manager Victoria Randall Davies both earned graduate degrees with a pair of student managers - Clement Perry (equipment manager) and Katie Moore (women's basketball, media relations assistant) completed undergraduate studies.

A combined 10 WCU student-athletes graduated "with praise," including five graduating magna cum laude. Of the 40 former student-athletes, nine earned All-Southern Conference accolades during their WCU careers including men's basketball senior Mike Williams this season and two-time All-SoCon women's golfer, Josefine Sundh. All-SoCon on the basketball hardwood, Emily Clarke walked over the weekend, as well as five members of WCU's 2008 SoCon Women's Soccer Championship squad in Liz Eichler, Erin Hamilton, Kellie Oberholtzer and the Tournament's MVP, Caitlin Williams.

Former WCU pitcher Tyler Sexton also had his degree confirmed over the weekend. Sexton was drafted in the 31st round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft and needed an internship to complete requirements of his Sport Management degree. After playing three seasons of professional baseball, the two-time ESPN The Magazine All-District III selection retired from baseball and completed his degree.
