Seven Catamount Coaches to Serve Time; Raise Money for Special Olympics

April 19, 2006

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Department of Athletics is teaming up with Bojangles' of Sylva and the Sylva Police Department in a fundraiser for Special Olympics North Carolina. Seven Catamount head coaches, along with WCU Director of Athletics Chip Smith and members of the WCU Cheerleading squad and Dance Team, will be participating in "Cops on Top," a fundraiser for Special Olympics North Carolina this weekend, starting Friday (Apr. 21) at 6:00 am and lasting until Sunday (Apr. 23) at 6:00 pm.

Members of the WCU Athletics Department will be "under arrest" and heading to "jail," Bojangles' jail that is. For 60 consecutive hours, the Sylva Police Department will place law enforcement on top of Bojangles', with WCU coaches spending at least one hour each with them. All "inmates" have a "bond" or a set amount of money they must raise before they can gain "bail." The members of the WCU Athletics Department must raise $100 each during their stint of incarceration, while the Sylva Police Department hopes to raise a total of $2,000. All proceeds will benefit the athletes of Special Olympics North Carolina in their quest for gold.

Special Olympics North Carolina, SONC, is a community-based sports organization that allows people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to unite with the public at large in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance. The SONC is made up of 37,000 athletics that can partake in 20 different sports, varying from gymnastics to alpine skiing. In addition, SONC offers training and competition for athletes in wheelchairs as well as those at the developmental level.

This year, the Special Olympics will come to the Cullowhee area on Saturday (April 29). It will be held on Western Carolina University's campus at the Catamount Athletics Complex from 10:00 am-3:00 pm.
