Cullowhee, N.C. - In celebration of National Athletic Training Month, the Western Carolina Athletic Training Association (WATA) will be holding the first-ever Cullowhee Hold'em 5K fun run/walk fundraiser. The race will be held on Saturday, April 21st and will begin at 9:30 at the Hunter Library on the campus of Western Carolina University. The race will then come to an end at Hinds University Center.
The first 100 runners to register will receive a FREE T-shirt. WCU students can register for the event for just $10, and $15 for all others.
This road race is unique in that it will combine exercise and poker. Each runner will be given a playing card at the one-mile, the 1.5 mile, the two mile and the 2.5 mile marks as well as at the end of the race. These five playing cards will become the players poker hand for the chance to win prizes at the completion of the event.
Prizes will be awarded to the overall male and female winners, as well as age group winners. Runners with the top poker hands will also be awarded prizes.
The Western Athletic Training Association is staging the race and will also provide on-site medical coverage for participants. WATA is hoping to raise money to assist students in attending regional and national conferences. Proceeds will help in sending members to 2007 Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association Meeting in Virginia Beach.
Application packets are available in Moore Hall, on the Western Carolina Athletic Training homepage and around campus.
So make your plans to come out and support a great cause this April 21st in Cullowhee!
