Cullowhee, N.C. - Jim Garrison, honored in 2007 by the Western Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame with its Career Achievement Award, passed away on Friday, April 3. Chowan University will host the visitation, service and reception for Garrison on Sunday, April 12, 2015.
Garrison, a 1955 graduate of Western Carolina, spent 37 years at the helm of the then-Chowan Braves football program as a part of spending more than 50 years of his life dedicated to Chowan University and its athletic department.
Garrison played football at WCU for two seasons - 1953 and '54 - after transferring to Cullowhee from Gardner-Webb. A team captain, he earned All-North State Conference accolades as a halfback in 1954, also earning Western Carolina's Athlete of the Year honor.
Following his graduation, Garrison became head coach at Chowan College in 1958 and built the junior college program into a national power. He produced 27 winning seasons in collecting 185 career victories. He ranked among the all-time greats as a head coach at the junior college level.
