Cullowhee, N.C. - With four victories out of five spring head-to-head competitions, Western Carolina has claimed the second-annual Parkway Series title, 11-2, over its mountain-rival, UNC Asheville.
WCU won the inaugural Parkway Series title a year ago by a score of 8-6 to win each of the first two years of the series.
This season, Western Carolina only dropped two of the 13 head-to-head meetings in the concurrent sports. The Catamounts garnered points by defeating the Bulldogs in volleyball, women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, women's basketball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and two on the diamond in baseball.
UNC Asheville claimed its points with victories in men's basketball and women's tennis, both tallies coming in Cullowhee.
Western Carolina and UNC Asheville have been "fighting like Cats and Dogs" since Dec. 10, 1965. In 2006, the two schools developed a head-to-head competition named "the Parkway Series," titled so after the Blue Ridge Parkway which runs between the two campuses of the University of North Carolina system.

History of the Parkway Series:
Western Carolina and UNC Asheville have been "fighting like Cats and Dogs" since Dec. 10, 1965. In 2006, the two developed a head-to-head trophy competition called "the Parkway Series," which is named after the Blue Ridge Parkway which runs between the two campuses.
For each head-to-head, men's and women's competition, a point will be awarded to the winning team. At the end of the year, the team which has accumulated the most points will be declared the winner of that year's series.
Western Carolina only dropped four of the 12 head-to-head meetings with the Bulldogs a year ago en route to claiming the series, 8-5. WCU dropped both cross country points, as well as the women's tennis point before splitting the two baseball games, falling at home before winning at McCormick Field in Asheville to claim the series.
