CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Twenty-three Western Carolina student-athletes, the second most on the list, earned spots on the Academic All-Southern Conference Team for the 2012-13 winter season the league office announced Wednesday. Western Carolina was just behind Appalachian State who had 28.

The 177 student-athletes on the team surpassed last year's winter total by 19. All 12 SoCon institutions were represented on the team, which honored student-athletes from men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, and wrestling.

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the winter season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

Four Western Carolina student-athletes were among eleven student-athletes on the winter All-Academic that has a cumulative 4.0 grade point average. Alex Abraham (women's basketball), Michaela Birek (women's indoor track and field), Makensey Campbell (women's basketball) and Michelle Provost (women's indoor track and field) each boast a 4.0.

The league's 12 women's indoor track and field teams provided the most academic all-conference members with 72, followed by men's indoor track and field with 52 and women's basketball with 36.
