Cullowhee, N.C. - By virtue of its head-to-head wins in both men's and women's outdoor track & field, Western Carolina has reclaimed a two-point advantage in the first-ever Parkway Series, presented by Arby's - The Winning Team to benefit Big Brothers-Big Sisters.
UNC Asheville had erased a two-point deficit earlier in the spring using back-to-back points from its wins in women's tennis (4-3 at Asheville) and in the first baseball meeting (7-6 in Cullowhee). However, the Catamount track & field teams dominated the series meeting at this past weekend's Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee.
Scoring for the head-to-head competition last weekend included awarding three points for every first place finish, two points for a second and one for a third in the individual events and three points in a first and one for a second in the relays. On the men's side, 19 total events were scored with Western garnering 94 points over 13 for UNC Asheville. In the women's competition with 18 events, the Catamounts scored 87 versus the Bulldogs' 12 to claim both Parkway Series points.
The final head-to-head competition in this inaugural year of the Parkway Series is slated for next Tuesday, April 10, as the Cats and Dogs renew their rivalry on the baseball diamond. The game is scheduled to be played at McCormick Field in Asheville with a first pitch of 7:00 pm.
The final two points will be awarded for a second semester volunteer hours with Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Asheville and through the donations raised to benefit the organization.
