SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Nineteen Western Carolina student-athletes earned spots on the Winter Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Tuesday.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the winter season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.'
Western Carolina ranked third with 19 student-athletes receiving SoCon winter academic honors. Among member institutions,Appalachian State led all schools with 23 members on the academic all-conference team. Chattanooga was second with 20.
All 11 SoCon institutions were represented on the latest edition of the academic all-conference team, which was comprised of student-athletes in the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling. The 160 on the list are tied for third-most on the winter team in league history, trailing only the 177 from last year, when there were 12 teams in the league, and the 191 in 2010-11, the last year before the GPA requirement moved up from 3.2.
