Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina University Dance Team, under the direction of head coach Teresa Crum, will hold open tryouts for the 2006-07 season this Saturday, April 1, on-campus in historic Reid Gymnasium. Auditions are open to all current WCU students, as well as incoming students for the fall of 2006.
Auditions will include a workshop to review technique and learn several different routines. Proper attire for the tryouts is required, including sports bra or tank top, dance pants and preferrably dance shoes, although tennis shoes will suffice. Registration for the tryouts will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday morning, with activities commencing at 9:00 am. In addition to displaying a wide array of technique, applicants must perform a learned sideline, technical, and hip hop routine as a part of the audition process, which is scheduled to begin around 3:30 pm.
Current Western Carolina students who wish to tryout must hold a grade point average of 2.0 or higher, while incoming applicants must show proof of acceptance to WCU in order to participate.
The WCU Dance Team, founded in 1995, performs at all home Western Carolina University football, Catamount basketball, and Lady Catamount basketball games. The squad works in conjunction with the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band, the Cathouse Band, and the Catamount Cheerleaders for special choreography, as well as arranging performances on its own. Each year, the dance team travels to the Southern Conference men and women's basketball championships, performing over the last several years in Greenville and Charleston, S.C., as well as Chattanooga, Tenn. The squad also went to the NCAA tournament with the Lady Catamounts in 2005 in Knoxville, Tenn.
Crum and select members of the dance team will be the special, in-studio guests on "In the Litterbox" tonight (Wednesday), heard exclusively on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee or online at www.WWCUFM.com.
