Cullowhee, N.C. - Open auditions for the 2017-18 Western Carolina University Dance Team will be held on-campus on Saturday, April 22nd from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm (registration begins at 9:45am) in Studio 1 of the Campus Recreation Center (CRC).
The tryouts are open to all returning WCU students in good academic standing, and all incoming students who have been accepted to the university for the fall of 2017. Tryouts are for a commitment for the entire 2017-18 academic year, including football, both men's and women's basketball season, and the 2018 NDA College Nationals Dance Competition in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Additional expectations include attendance at the 2018 Southern Conference Basketball Championships in Asheville, N.C., and participation in all mandatory fundraising activities with the squad, team building events and community service projects.
The WCU Dance Team generally practices three-times a week with additional strength and conditioning workouts twice a week. During the fall, the team has additional rehearsals with the "Pride of the Mountains" Marching Band, as well as working with the Catamount Cheerleaders and "Purple Thunder" drum line on a special routine for basketball season.
The typical season for the WCU Dance Team runs from early-August with participation in the National Dance Association (NDA) camp through April, with the addition of a long weekend in June for WCU summer dance camp.
Requirements for tryout/team include:
Leaps (both directions), switch leap, and leap in second, calypso, and turning disc;
Double and triple turns, turns in second combination (two 8 counts);
Toe touch and other jumps;
Choreography (learn a short dance - jazz, pom and hip hop);
Timed mile run (under 9 minutes);
Participants in the tryouts are asked to please wear athletic, dance attire that will allow you to perform your best. Be prepared to run by bringing running shoes, as well as all other dance shoes you may need to perform jazz, hip hop and pom routines. For current students, CatCards are required to gain access to the CRC. If you do not have a CatCard, please let the front desk staff know.
Tryout registration and assumption of risk forms are required and will be available on-site for the audition. If you are under the age of 18, please E-mail Jessica Graning at firstname.lastname@example.org prior to the tryout to complete the assumption of risk form with parent/guardian signature.
