Cullowhee, N.C. - Nominations for the 2012 Western Carolina University Athletic Hall of Fame are currently being accepted through Friday, March 16, 2012. WCU will induct its 23rd class all-time next fall during the home football weekend against Chattanooga, Nov. 2-3.
All told, a combined 103 former student-athletes, coaches and administrators, four teams, nine Patron Award winners and two honored for career achievement after WCU have been inducted in the first 22 years of the existence of the Hall of Fame.
Criteria for nomination into the WCU Athletic Hall of Fame include having distinguished oneself through outstanding contributions while representing Western Carolina University as a student-athlete, coach or associate of the Athletic Department. A minimum of five (5) years must have elapsed since the student-athletes participated at the University or since the association with the Athletic Department has ended, with the only exception coming by way of a posthumous award.
Files on each nominee are kept for a five-year period at which time an individual must be re-nominated for consideration into the Hall.
A 10-member committee will weigh each nomination before selection the 2012 class, with a nominee needing seven out of the 10 possible votes. All inductees will be subject to final review and approval by WCU Chancellor Dr. David Belcher. Once the selections are approved, the 2012 Hall of Fame class will be announced during the summer months.
