It's Not Just Basketball Season, But It Still IS Basketball Season

Cullowhee, N.C. - As the men's and women's basketball regular season is drawing to a close, the Catamount spring sports teams are already in full swing. However, before we get to that, let's not forget the basketball season.

The men's basketball team, under first-year head coach Larry Hunter, is 5-5 in the Southern Conference North Division and stand in second place. Western will take this weekend off before starting a string of three consecutive home games, starting with arch rival Appalachian State on Monday (Feb. 13). In addition to the Mountaineers' presence sparking an interest, the Department of Athletics is hosting a number of promotions that night to add to the atmosphere. First, everyone is encouraged to wear their Purple and Gold. Second, there will be a pre-game reception for members the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Catamount Club (for more information contact Ann Brett Strickland at 828-227-2541). Following the App State game, Western will host SoCon North leader Elon (Feb. 18) and UNC Greensboro (Feb. 21) before closing the regular-season at Chattanooga (Feb. 21). All games will start at 7 pm.

The women's team plays three of its final four regular-season games on the road with its lone home contest coming Feb. 20 versus the College of Charleston.

As for the spring sports...

Track & Field, featuring reigning SoCon Male Track & Field Performer of the Week Zeb Johnson, has already had three indoor meets and participates in the SoCon Indoor Championships Feb. 24-25 in Johnson City, Tenn. The outdoor schedule features two home meets, including the Western Carolina Invitational at the new Catamount Athletic Complex (CAC) Mar. 31-April 1 and the Catamount Classic at the CAC April 21.

Softball will play its first ever games this weekend at the Georgia State Tournament. All three games will be broadcast on WWCU, Power 90.5 FM, including Tennessee Tech Feb. 11 at 10 am, Georgia State Feb. 11 at 2:30 pm, Mercer Feb. 12 at 12:15 pm and bracket play on Feb. 12. The softball team will then open up its brand new facility on Sunday (Feb. 19), hosting South Carolina State for a doubleheader at 1:30 pm.

Baseball will open its 2006 season on Saturday (Feb. 18), hosting Butler for a Noon doubleheader. The following day, the Cats will also host Butler in a single game, also starting at Noon.

Tennis has already played twice on the road, trend that will continue until Mar. 1 when the Catamounts will open its new facility on March 1 when the UNC Bulldogs come to the CAC at 2 pm.

The men's and women's golf team has yet to tee it up for an event this spring, each seeing action during the fall. Both squads will open its spring schedule Mar. 6-7. The women's team will travel to Mobile, Ala., to play in the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational. The men's team will travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to play in Campbell's Hargrove David Intercollegiate.
