27 Western Carolina Student-Athletes Named to 2009 SoCon Fall Academic All-Conference Team

Jan. 27, 2010

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina had 27 student-athletes named to the 2009 Southern Conference Fall Academic All-Conference team released today by the conference office. A total of 316 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team averaging a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

League-wide, women's soccer placed a combined 79 student-athletes on the honorary squad, with football boasting 71. Elon led all schools with 39 honorees, followed by Wofford with 38, Samford with 29 and Appalachian State with 28.

Comparable to the conference trend, WCU had a sport-high 12 women's soccer players recognized, followed by six combined Catamounts from the cross country squads, five Catamount volleyball players and four from the football team. The women's soccer program was awarded their fifth-straight National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) team academic award with a combined GPA of 3.25 for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Sophomore volleyball player Carrie Minogue was one of 10 Southern Conference student-athletes to earn a 4.0 GPA for the fall semester.

To be eligible for the SoCon's Academic All-Conference, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded fall campaign.

Eighteen of Western's 27 honorees have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Last year the Catamounts garnered a total of 80 Academic All-Conference team selections combined across the three seasons (24 in the fall, 23 in the winter and 33 in the spring).

This is the eighth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season.
