Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Department of Athletics will honor its student-athletes who posted a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better in 2004 during halftime of the Catamounts' men's basketball game with Davidson Wednesday (Jan. 19). Tip-off for the game is set for 7:00 pm.
This past fall, a total of 155 student-athletes had a GPA or 3.0 or better, including 10 Catamount student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester and 57 having a GPA between 3.5-3.9. During the spring of 2004, a total of 122 student-athletes had a GPA of 3.0 or better, including 12 with a perfect 4.0 GPA and 47 having a GPA between 3.5-3.9.
During the fall semester, eight of the 14 WCU teams (with indoor and outdoor track & field counting once) had a both a semester and cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. The tennis team led the way with a 3.815 GPA for the fall semester and a cumulative GPA of 3.826. They were followed by soccer (3.55 semester GPA and 3.542 cumulative GPA), women's golf (3.474 semester GPA and 3.510 cumulative GPA), women's track & field (3.323 semester GPA and 3.323 cumulative GPA), women's cross country (3.24 semester GPA and 3.245 cumulative GPA), volleyball (3.073 semester GPA and 3.113 cumulative GPA), women's basketball (3.016 semester GPA and 3.075 cumulative GPA) and baseball (3.037 semester GPA and 3.016 cumulative GPA).
A break down of the teams above shows that tennis had all six players post at least a 3.0 GPA for the fall semester, women's golf had all 10 players post at least a 3.0, soccer had 20 of its 21 players post at least a 3.0, women's tack & field had 22 of its 27 players (81.5 percent of the team) with at least a 3.0, women's cross country had five of its seven players (71.4 percent of the team) with at least a 3.0, volleyball had nine of its 13 players (69.2 percent of the team) post at least a 3.0, baseball had 17 of its 30 players (56.6 percent of the team) with least a 3.0 and women's basketball had six of 14 players (42.9 percent of the team) with at least a 3.0.
