24 Western Carolina Student-Athletes Named to 2008 SoCon Fall Academic All-Conference Team

Jan. 15, 2009

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina had 24 student-athletes named to the 2008 Southern Conference Fall Academic All-Conference team released today by the conference office. A total of 291 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team averaging a 3.55 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

League-wide, women's soccer placed a combined 71 student-athletes on the honorary squad, with football boasting 54. Wofford led all schools with 44 honorees, followed by Elon with 35, The Citadel with 26 and Furman and Samford with 25 each.

Comparable to the conference trend, WCU had a sport-high ten women's soccer players recognized, followed by six Catamount football players, five combined from the cross country squads and three from the volleyball team. The women's soccer program was awarded their four-straight National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) team academic award with a combined GPA of 3.39 for the fall semester.

To be eligible for the SoCon's Academic All-Conference, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded fall campaign.

Seventeen of Western's 24 honorees have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Last year the Catamounts garnered a total of 70 Academic All-Conference team selections combined across the three seasons (25 in the fall, 11 in the winter and 34 in the spring).

This is the seventh year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season.
