Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina had 24 student-athletes be named to the Southern Conference TIAA/CREF Fall All-Academic Team for maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2, while competing in a fall varsity sport and being at least a sophomore. The list included 16 from the SoCon champion women's soccer team, four from the football team, three from the cross country team and one from the volleyball team.
Not only do those 24 student-athletes from the fall have an excellent cumulative GPA, but a total of 128 Catamounts from all sports posted at least a GPA of 3.0 for the 2005 Fall semester. Included in that list of 128, there were 66 student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher and an amazing 12 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0.
Members of the women's soccer team on the SoCon TIAA/CREF Fall All-Academic Team include Lauren Atkinson, Melissa Berry, Megan Chambers, Bailey Culp, Leah Daino, Casey Davis, Heather Dittmer, Keevy Harris, Tammy Jones, Natasha Moore, Rebekah Mumm, Marie Nicolini, Emily Pierce, Meghan Reilly, Alesha Row and Natalie Turgeon.
The football team was represented by Stephen Brown, Buck Freeman, Travis Hill and Linden Ryan, who graduated from Western in August 2005. The cross country team was represented by Deanna Kulesz, Kerrie Savery and Elise Wallace. Meredith Harmon from the volleyball team rounded out the list for Western.
In addition, eight Catamount teams currently have a cumulative GPA over 3.0, including tennis (3.627), women's golf (3.569), soccer (3.483), volleyball (3.204), softball (3.151), baseball (3.097), women's cross country (3.051) and women's track & field (3.013).
"Western's student-athletes balance a social life with class attendance, study sessions, practices, conditioning workouts, and competitions," said Gibbs Knotts, WCU's Faculty Athletics Representative. "Given these time demands, the academic success of Western's student-athletes is truly remarkable."
