Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina Athletics and the Catamount Club have again partnered with Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort for the 10th installment of the Catamount Golf Tour. This year, the five-event tour spans six months and includes many highly anticipated golf tournaments.
As the fundraising golf tour hits the decade mark, the biggest change centers around the move of "The Mutt" Catamount Football Classic into October this year. This year's schedule runs from May through October with five stops across North Carolina.
The 2017 Catamount Golf Tour tees off on Monday, May 8 with the WCU Charlotte / Metrolina Open, which has a new home this year. The TPC at Piper Glen in Charlotte will play host as the curtain raises on this year's tour. This stop ranks among the top most prestigious venues on the tour as golfers will meander the rolling Piedmont terrain and maneuver around natural rock outcroppings and lake inlets on an Arnold Palmer designed course.
Additional stops along the way include the annual Catamount Shootout at the Marion Lake Club in Nebo, N.C., on Friday, June 9, and the WCU Great Smokies Invitational at The Ridges Golf Club in Hayesville, N.C., on Friday, July 14 -- both favorites among the tour participants.
The final two stops of the 2017 tour both coincide with home Catamount football games. The 13th Annual Bob Waters Memorial will be held on Friday, Sept. 8 at the Maggie Valley Club and Resort in Maggie Valley, N.C. The next day, the Catamount football team opens the home portion of its 2017 schedule on the field that bears Waters' name, hosting the Davidson Wildcats in Cullowhee. Be a part of the field that honors and remembers WCU's all-time winningest head football coach and former athletics administrator, Hall of Fame member, Bob Waters.
The tour then concludes in late October with "The Mutt" Catamount Football Classic, in remembrance of long-time Catamount football coaching legend and another WCU Athletics Hall of Famer, Al "Mutt" DeGraffenreid. Now lovingly known as "The Mutt," the final tour stop is scheduled for Friday, October 27th, hosted at Lauren Ridge Country Club in Waynesville. Perhaps appropriately so, the 2017 installment of "The Mutt" kicks off WCU's Homecoming, 2017 weekend festivities - and the Catamounts' home game against Southern Conference rival, the Furman Paladins.
Each golf tour stop includes the traditional golf tournament side events such as "closest to the pin" contests on selected par-3 holes, and a "longest drive" competition. Wrap-up each event with a tournament dinner and the event awards presentation at each stop.
The Catamount Golf Tour was established in 2008 to generate additional financial support to directly benefit Western Carolina student-athletes. The events are a great opportunity to engage in the local community and rally alumni and fans alike, while also getting Western Carolina coaches together to generate excitement for the upcoming year. This is another way to be involved with WCU by giving back to support our student-athletes while enjoying a great day of golf.
Individuals or businesses can help sponsor the 2017 Catamount Golf Tour with tax-deductible contributions that include specific tournament, food and tour-wide options, or individual hole sponsorships. A new contribution opportunity this year in addition to hole signage is to actually sponsor a pin flag, which will be adorned with your business name and/or logo fluttering in the breeze as the participants hit the green.
