Spartanburg, S.C. – Following two rounds at the Wofford Invitational, the Western Carolina men’s golf team sits in 14th-place, slipping one spot in the standings over the second 18 holes with a two-round total score of 607 after carding rounds of 307 and 300 on Monday. Freshman Tumi Kúld leads the Catamount scoring five with a score of 147 (74-73) at the par-72, 6,648-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.
Kúld countered four bogeys with a pair of birdies and 14 pars in the first round for a 2-over par 74 before posting three birdies against two bogeys and one double-bogey to trim a stroke off his second round for a 1-over par, 73, in the second.
Sophomore Michael Coe carded a team-best six birdies on Monday. The Cary, N.C., product shot a 2-over round of 74 in the first round before shooting 6-over par 78 for a two-round score of 152. Freshman Louis Theys made among the biggest jumps on the day, slicing 11 strokes off his first-round score of 83 to shoot a team-best, even-par 72 in the second 18 holes to climb into a tie for 70th overall. Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are senior George Whitbread in 78th overall at 156 (79-77) and sophomore Zach Caudill in a tie for 79th at 158 (80-78).
Collectively as a team, WCU ranks tied for sixth in par-5 scoring at 8-under par (4.80). The Catamounts posted a combined 96 pars and 24 birdies on Monday.
Playing unattached as an individual, sophomore Chandler Metz is 88th overall with a two-round score of 171 (90-81), carding a pair of birdies in the second round.
After the first round, tournament-host Wofford led the 16-team field by a stroke over its Southern Conference and Upstate rival, Furman, 280-to-281. The Terriers, though, slipped to third in the second round as Furman grabbed a nine-stroke edge over second-place Austin Peay State, 561-to-570. Wofford (571) is a stroke out of the runner-up spot with Gardner-Webb (576) and Radford (577) rounding out the top five.
Playing as an individual, South Carolina’s Ryan Hall and Furman’s Jack Crosby lead the 88-golfer field with matching scores of 9-under par 135.
Paired with golfers from Delaware, Presbyterian and Appalachian State in foursomes, WCU’s scoring five hits the course at 9:00 am on Tuesday between the 13th and 16th holes. Live scoring of Tuesday’s final round is available online at BirdieFire.com.
