Spartanburg, S.C. – Western Carolina senior libero Meagan Sanchez was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday by league officials. The award is the first for Sanchez this season and second of her career.

The Bristow, Va. native leads the league with 62 digs and 5.64 digs per set after the opening weekend of the 2019 season. Sanchez turned in a season-best 24 digs against Fordham on Saturday morning and had 22 digs in WCU’s 3-1 season-opening win over Georgia State on Friday night. She also had 16 digs against Lamar on Saturday afternoon.

Western Carolina travels to Chicago this weekend for the Windy City Invitational. The Catamounts face Cal State Fullerton and Alabama State on Friday before a contest with tournament host Chicago State on Saturday.
