Cullowhee, N.C. – The 2019 edition of the Western Carolina volleyball team hit the court for the first time on Thursday as preseason camp got underway at the Ramsey Center. Prior to Thursday’s two practices, the team held its annual photo day on Wednesday afternoon.

During both a late morning and midafternoon practice session, offensive fundamentals and skill work were the focus as the team was split into two groups for coaching by head coach Karen Glover and first-year assistant coach Chelsi Carter. The Catamounts will hold morning and afternoon practices through Saturday before an off day on Sunday.

WCU returns 11 players from 2018 including seven starters and nine student-athletes who participated in 20-or-more matches a season ago. Among the returners are seniors Aleah Keaton, Meagan Sanchez, and Abigail Veit along with juniors Hannah Price and MaKenzie White, and 2018 Southern Conference All-Freshmen Team member Merry Gebel.

Following a home exhibition match against Anderson on Aug. 26, WCU opens the season on Friday, Aug. 30 at the GSU Invitational in Atlanta. The Catamounts face tournament host Georgia State along with Fordham and Lamar at the season-opening event.
